Who Needs to Renew Their FSSAI License?

Every FSSAI registration and license has an expiry date — renewal is mandatory under Section 31(1) of the FSS Act, 2006

📋

Basic Registration Holders

Basic Registrations issued before April 2026 are valid for 1–5 years and must be renewed. Registrations issued from April 1, 2026 onwards have perpetual validity — no renewal needed. Check your certificate issue date.

🏢

State License Holders

State Licenses are issued for 1 to 5 years. Restaurants, caterers, food manufacturers with State License must renew before the expiry printed on their certificate.

🏛️

Central License Holders

Central License is valid for 1 to 5 years. Large manufacturers, importers, exporters, and multi-state businesses need timely Central License renewal to avoid operations halt.

🚨

Expired License Holders

Already expired? You can still renew — but a late fee of ₹100 per day from the expiry date will be added. The sooner you renew, the less penalty you pay.

🛒

E-Commerce & Aggregator Sellers

Swiggy, Zomato, Instamart, and Amazon require a valid (not expired) FSSAI number to keep your listing active. An expired license results in immediate suspension from the platform.

🏪

Businesses Facing Inspections

FSSAI food safety officers regularly conduct surprise inspections. An expired license at the time of inspection leads to heavy fines and potential business closure.

When Should You Apply for Renewal?

FSSAI recommends applying for renewal at least 30 days before expiry to avoid any gap in your license validity

Best: 30–60 Days Before Expiry

Apply early to leave enough buffer for government processing. No penalty. Renewed license starts from your current expiry date — not wasted.

⚠️

Okay: Less Than 30 Days Before Expiry

You can still apply but risk a gap in license validity if processing takes longer. Recommend expedited filing — we can help.

🚨

Urgent: Already Expired

Late penalty of ₹100/day applies from expiry date. File immediately to minimise total penalty. Operating with expired license may invite FSSAI enforcement action.

NEW FROM APRIL 2026

Already have a post-April 2026 license?
Manage your Annual Maintenance Fee

From April 1, 2026, FSSAI licenses have perpetual validity — no more renewal every 1–5 years. However, all license holders must pay an Annual Maintenance Fee (AMF) every year. If AMF is not paid on time, your license is automatically marked "Deemed Suspended" — you cannot legally sell food products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about FSSAI License Renewal

You should start your FSSAI renewal at least 30 days before your license expiry date. FSSAI allows you to renew up to 30 days before expiry. If you renew 1–5 years in advance, you get a full validity extension from your existing expiry date — you don't lose any days. We recommend setting a reminder 45 days before expiry.
If you renew your FSSAI license after the expiry date, a late fee of ₹100 per day is charged from the date of expiry. This penalty applies even if you were unaware of the expiry. For example, a 30-day delay adds ₹3,000 to your renewal cost. Operating with an expired license can also lead to business closure orders and penalties up to ₹5 lakhs.
Yes, you can renew an expired FSSAI license, but you will be charged a late penalty of ₹100 per day from the expiry date. If the license has been expired for a very long time, the authorities may treat it as a fresh application. It is always better to renew before expiry to avoid penalties and business disruption.
FSSAI renewal typically takes 3–7 working days with our service. Basic Registration renewals are faster (3–5 days). State and Central License renewals take slightly longer (5–15 days) due to additional scrutiny. We file your renewal application promptly and track it through completion, keeping you updated via WhatsApp.
